Werther's manufactures candy that is wrapped individually and sold in a variety of boxes or packages. The candy features colorful wrappers and is a favorite of many who enjoy the variety of flavors Werther's creates. However, the USDA Food Guide suggests that a healthful diet contains limited amounts of sugar, a primary ingredient in some forms of the candy. In addition, to minimize dental problems, you should brush your teeth as soon as you've consumed the sugared versions of the treat.

Types

Werther's nutritional information varies according to the variety. Candies are available as sugar-free or regular, and come in either hard candy or caramel form. Hard candies are the foundation of Werther's candy line.

Identification

Each package of Werther's candy includes information about the individual servings inside, not the individual candy. Serving sizes vary according to the type. For example, a serving of Werther's Original Hardy Candies includes three pieces of candy. The serving size for Werther's Original Caramels includes six pieces of candy.

Features

All nutritional information for Werther's candy includes a listing of ingredients. For both caramel and chocolate versions of the original candy, the first ingredient is milk chocolate, which is broken down into its component parts of sugar, whole milk, cocoa butter and other ingredients. From a nutritional perspective, the lead ingredient contains a significant amount of sugar, followed by other sweeteners.

Considerations

A serving size is relatively generous and includes from 70 to 240 calories, depending on the type of candy you eat. Generally, the hard candies are lower in calories than the caramel version. In addition, hard candies take more time to eat so they might soothe your sweet tooth more effectively.

Theories/Speculation

If you're watching your sugar intake, the nutritional information for sugar-free candies makes it clear that sugar is not a key ingredient. Instead, the main ingredient for sweetener is acesulfame-k. The sugar-free option has no effect on your carb count, a key piece of nutritional information for diabetics. In addition, the sugar-free hard candies have only 40 calories in five pieces of candy.
