The Atkins Diet was originally introduced by cardiologist Dr. Robert Atkins in 1972.
Ketosis
The Atkins Diet sends the body into a state known as ketosis by limiting carbohydrate intake. In ketosis, the body burns fat for fuel rather than carbohydrates, thus increasing fat loss.
Acceptable Foods
Foods consumed on the Atkins Diet consist primarily of fish, poultry, red meat, eggs, cheese, vegetables, nuts and oils.
Four Phases
The four phases of the Atkins Diet include induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance.
Considerations
The Atkins Diet plan represents only one approach to fat loss. Because the diet does bring the body into an extreme state, perform careful research and understand the program entirely before jumping into it.
