How to Get Pregnant After a Tubal Ligation

Tubal ligation, or having your "tubes tied," is a surgery that prevents eggs from passing from the ovaries through the fallopian tubes into the uterus and stops semen from reaching ovarian eggs. Tubal ligation is often done as a permanent birth control method and, according to the Mayo Clinic, there is a 99 percent effectiveness rate. If you have had a tubal ligation and are wishing to become pregnant you have two options that you can explore to get pregnant, in vitro fertilization (IVF) or a reversal ligation surgery.

Step 1

Talk with your gynecologist about your options for a future pregnancy. The gynecologist will review your health and likelihood of getting pregnant on the sperm quality of the male partner, status of any possible pelvic conditions, your age, egg quality and egg count.

Step 2

Have a tubal ligation reversal surgery. This option will reverse your tubal ligation surgery, and you should not need any fertility drugs in order to get pregnant. Have unprotected intercourse once you are healed from reversal surgery to become pregnant.

Step 3

Talk with your gynecologist about IVF. IVF is a procedure where the egg is fertilized with the man's sperm outside of the body and implanted into the woman's uterus. Take all fertility medications given by your physician to increase your chances for becoming pregnant.
