Kundalini Yoga first made its appearance in the 1960s. Yogi Bhajan began to promote Kundalini Yoga as a way to spiritual peace, healthier lifestyles and a deeper mind-body connection. The yoga poses in a Kundalini workout increase flexibility as the body stretches its muscles. The breathing poses aim to strengthen the nervous system. Kundalini also includes meditation to aid in relaxation.
Equipment
Kundalini Yoga requires no equipment. All you will need is your body and an open mind. Wear comfortable clothing in order to maneuver through the poses. A yoga mat can be used in order to provide a secure footing for your poses. The practice should be done in bare feet.
Breath
The breath is the main focus of Kundalini Yoga. Yogi Bhajan uses different breathing techniques such as the breath of fire, one-minute breath and alternate-nostril breathing.
Time
You will need to set aside a time that will be free of distractions. Yoga practice can last anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes depending on your abilities. This is time for you, so set your phone to receive messages and do not let anything take you away from your yoga workout.
Space
The yoga poses do not take up much space, but clear yourself ample room in which to practice. If at home, place your mat in the center of the room away from any tables or chairs, so that if you do lose your balance you will not fall into furniture.
Relaxation
Not everyone has the ability to relax. Kundalini Yoga strives for meditation and relaxation. If this is your first yoga workout, do not expect to last for the entire relaxation session. Just like any other workout, the more time you spend in relaxation, the easier it will become and the longer the peaceful feeling will stay with you.
