How Nutrisystem Works

Introduction

The diet plan Nutrisystem was begun as a series of weight loss centers that went bankrupt in 1990s. As it reemerged as a diet plan in 2007, Nutrisystem grew rapidly. Consumers were eager to try a diet plan in which meals were delivered and there was no counting calories or messy preparation. Today, Nutrisystem is still a popular choice for those looking to lose weight easily, but an expensive one; as of 2009 one month of Nutrisystem costs roughly $350, depending on the options you choose.

Glycemic Index

Nutrisystem touts the importance of eating according to the glycemic index. The glycemic index is basically a rating system that assigns foods a value depending on what they do to affect your blood sugar. Nutrisystem contends that eating foods that keep blood sugar levels stable is a good way to lose weight, and the meals and snacks that come with this plan are all planned and prepared with the glycemic index in mind.

Choosing a Plan

Nutrisystem is not a one-size-fits-all plan. In order to begin the plan, you need to first choose the plan that's right for you. There are separate plans and calorie counts for both men and women, and once you have chosen your gender, you can then choose a plan that best fits your lifestyle. Plans for those over age 65, basic plans, plans for diabetics and vegetarians are all available. Once you choose the meal plan you'd prefer, Nutrisystem gears up to send the meals to your home.

Food Delivery

You'll receive your Nutrisystem food in about five days. You won't have to count calories or prepare anything. All of the food is frozen and placed in your freezer, where you'll microwave it for each meal. Some of the meal options include pizza, lasagna, pasta and even hamburgers, but all need to be defrosted and heated before consuming. You can choose an option to have food delivered each month, do it on a month-by-month basis or even choose foods a la carte.

Tracking Success

Nutrisystem offers online tracking systems, forums and groups for you to stay motivated while eating the food, partaking in an exercise routine and losing weight. Nutrisystem dieters are urged to weigh and measure themselves weekly, and to record their results on the interactive tool to see their progress. Nutrisystem can be a very effective weight loss system. It also can be costly, but it also gives you the power to eat without counting calories, and gives you plenty of online support to improve your chances of being successful.
