Negative Side Effects of Red Yeast Rice

Red yeast rice or, monascus purpureus, comes from yeast grown in rice. According to MayoClinic.com, red yeast rice contains multiple compounds known as monacolins. These substances are known to inhibit the production of cholesterol. Red yeast rice has been used in China since 800 A.D. and is still sold today as a natural cholesterol-lowering diet supplement.

Headaches and Stomach Discomfort

According to MayoClinic.com and the FDA, red yeast rice supplementation can cause minor, uncomfortable side effects including mild headaches, gas and bloating, dizziness and heartburn.

Muscle Pain and Allergic Reactions

There are a few potential major side effects associated with red yeast rice, reports MayoClinic.com. Muscle pain and damage, asthma, severe allergic reaction, abdominal discomfort and kidney problems have all been reported.

Possible Fetal Damage

The National Institutes of Health recommends that expectant mothers as well as those nursing should avoid the use of red yeast rice, as many of its chemicals and compounds closely mirror other prescription medications not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
