Facts on Selecting A Running Shoe

1. Evaluate Wear Patterns

Look at the wear patterns in your old running shoes to determine what type of running shoe you need to purchase. Wear on the inside of the shoe indicates that a runner over-pronates. These runners need a motion control running shoe. Wear on the outside of shoes indicates that a runner under-pronates. These runners should be looking for a more cushioned shoe. Wear down the middle of the shoe indicates normal wear. This runner should be looking for a stability running shoe.

2. Shop Around

Look for stores with a wide selection of running shoes and a knowledgeable staff. Having a knowledgeable staff allows you to ask questions and determine if the shoes you try on are a good fit. Megamarts and chain stores, such as Wal-mart and Just for Feet, may have variety, but specialized running and sports stores, such as locally owned stores, may have more experienced staff to help you. Shop around until you find a place you feel gives you the best service.

3. Try Different Brands and Models

Select several different shoes in your category. For example, if you need a motion-controlled shoe, select from different brands with motion control models, such as Nike and Sacony. Try to ignore colors, price tags and any other bells and whistles. You are looking for a running shoe with the best fit and support. Remember to try on both the left and the right shoe. Your feet aren't the same, so while it may fit right and feel good on one foot, it may not work for the other.

4. Take a Trial Run

When trying on running shoes, it isn't just enough to put the shoe on. Walk around in them or even jog around the store, if you can. Notice the bend and give of the shoes. Remember that a running shoe is the only thing separating you from the pavement. You want a shoe that is comfortable in the end and wearing them around the store for a few minutes gives you a small sneak preview.

5. The Final Breakdown

Over time, the soles wear out and the cushioning and support start to break down. The more running you do, the faster this happens. Once you have found a brand and style that you like, monitor how long they last. This can play a role in selecting your next running shoe. Though no running shoe lasts forever, you want to find one that meets your needs throughout the life of the shoe.
