A sports or exercise injury can increase the risks of developing osteoarthritis--the most common form of arthritis, according to the Mayo Clinic. The resulting pain in the knees can make everyday activities unbearable. While medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help, some people choose to use supplements to complement their medications. Talk to your doctor about which supplements are safe for your condition.

Thunder God Vine Supplements

Thunder god vine is a perennial plant that has been used for some time in traditional Chinese medicine. The peeled vine is made into extracts to treat inflammation and conditions caused by overactive immune systems. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine reports that the herb can also be taken orally, as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune system diseases. Topical applications may help relieve rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Side effects include menstrual changes, skin rashes, headache and hair loss. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of using the herb for knee joint pain.

Glucosamine Sulfate Supplements

Glucosamine is a compound that naturally occurs in cartilage--the elastic bands that protect the joints. When cartilage diminishes, bones lose their cushioning and knee pain arises. Glucosamine supplements are purported to help rebuild cartilage and decrease joint pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, evidence supports the use of glucosamine sulfate in the treatment of osteoarthritis, specifically of the knee. Due to the product's effectiveness, the clinic says patients may decrease their dosages of other medications for joint inflammation.

Fish Oil Supplements

Fish oil capsules, which contain essential fatty acids, are widely used supplements for a multitude of health conditions. People take the supplements for conditions affecting the bones, heart, skin and brain. Fish, some plant life and nut oils are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids, though complementing the diet with supplements is proven to boost their effects on health. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that fish oil supplements help reduce inflammation and may help reduce the risks of arthritis. Talk to your doctor about using fish oil supplements for reducing knee pain and inflammation. Drug interactions may occur.
