Does the One Day Diet Work?

The One Day Diet is a mixture of a diet philosophy and oral health supplement, used together to help increase the success of a diet, without making the participant feel like she is dieting. Designed by the Affinity corporation, the One Day Diet has become a popular choice for those looking for an easier way to lose weight. However, the diet does come with both its advantages and disadvantages.

How it Works

The One Day Diet works by rotating between one day of dieting and one day of eating whatever you want. On the days that you diet, your meals are restricted to specialized health wafers, mixed with fruits, vegetables and a selection of other approved foods. On the days you don't diet, you are encouraged to still watch your calories, but are also encouraged to eat like you normally would. Since you are only dieting for one day at a time, the theory is you can be more successful, since you wont feel like you are neglecting your stomach for longer than 24 hours. The calories that you burn on the dieting days go towards your overall calorie deficit for the week, resulting in lost weight.

Wafers

The One Day Diet works by using specially designed wafers that are eaten once an hour on the days you diet. These wafers come in different flavors (such as chocolate and vanilla) to help increase their taste value. Each wafer is made up of a high protein and carbohydrate solution that is mixed with other nutrients and supplemental ingredients. According to the Affinity website, some of the active ingredients in the wafer include: Vitamins C, D, E and B, folic acid, iron, chromium, sugar and whey protein. Wafers are purchased directly from the Affinity website and cost approximately $40 per unit, for a supply of seven days.

Glucose Levels

Each wafer includes a healthy dose of complex carbohydrates. Since wafers are consumed every hour on the days you diet, these carbohydrates can be used to keep your body stocked with the right levels of glucose (as glucose is produced by the breakdown of carbohydrates in the body). Diets that include fasting, or severe calorie restriction, limit the amount of glucose production in the body. This can result in issues with energy production and feelings of hunger and being tired. The constant low levels of glucose can lead to cravings for high sugar, high carb, calorie laden snack foods that ultimately ruin your diet.

Diet Trick

Another way that the One Day Diet works is by tricking your body into thinking it is not dieting. As you restrict your food in the typical diet, your body reacts in a defensive way by restricting the amount of calories it uses by lowering your metabolism. The higher your metabolism, the more calories you can burn in a day. Since on the One Diet Plan you are never dieting for more than 24 hours, the body (in theory) does not have enough time to enter defensive mode before returning to normal eating on your days off. This allows you to take in less calories over the week, while not losing any momentum from your metabolism.

Disadvantages

The One Day Diet is not without its disadvantages. When approaching this diet, it is important not to take eating whatever you want as an excuse to eat unhealthy huge portion sizes on your days off. Losing weight depends on creating an overall calorie deficit each week. Eating too many calories on your days off can more than make up for the calories you cut from your diet on the diet days. This can lead to actually gaining weight, rather than losing it. It may also train your body into unhealthy eating habits on your days off, which will likely stick around once you have stopped buying wafers. The second major disadvantage to the One Day Diet is its price. With such a high price tag per unit, the One Day Diet wafers may be out of reach for those on a budget.
