Unlike motorized treadmills that have complex wiring circuits and automated features, non-motorized treadmills operate by foot power. The walking belt resides on an incline and turns on rollers at each end of the walking surface. Adjustments are limited to setting the angle of incline, walking belt tension and belt alignment. Some models include a sensor that monitors rate of speed and duration of workouts, but this is a convenience and not related to the mechanical workings of a non-motorized treadmill. A few basic hand tools and a clear working area are all that's needed to fix a non-motorized treadmill.

Step 1

Put the treadmill on one side so the belt tension adjustment knob is facing up. Use a hex wrench to remove the nut on the roller hub at the front of the treadmill, and set the hub aside. Turn the tension adjustment knob counterclockwise to relax tension on the walking belt.

Step 2

Use a socket and ratchet to remove the bolt that secures the right side flywheel. Slide the flywheel up and off the front roller shaft. Rotate the walking belt by hand and inspect the underside of the belt for signs of excessive wear or hard patches. Wear on the edges of a belt signify improper alignment. If the underside surface of the belt is damaged or inconsistent, remove the side cover from the treadmill, slide the belt off the front and rear rollers and install a new walking belt.

Step 3

Lift the edge of the walking belt and clean the surface of the walking plate with a clean rag. Rotate the front and rear rollers and clean them as well. Replace the flywheel onto the shaft and tighten the bolt that holds it in place. Replace the hub and tighten the nut to secure it to the treadmill. Return the treadmill to the upright position.

Step 4

Locate the belt adjustment bolt at the back end of the treadmill. Have an assistant walk on the treadmill and note the alignment of the belt. If the belt tracks off center, turn the adjustment knob with a hex wrench as you observe the alignment. Make adjustments in increments of 1/2-turns either way until the belt tracks in the center of the rollers.

Step 5

Consult the owner's manual or contact a treadmill technician to determine the correct lubricant for your non-motorized treadmill. Apply the lubricant to the walking deck as recommended. Replace height adjustment pins or rubber footpads, if needed.
