How to Prevent Disease by Eating More Alkaline Foods

Making any changes to your lifestyle, especially diet, can be difficult, but if you want to live a long and healthy life, it's a necessity. You can prevent diseases, such as cancer, by increasing the amounts of alkaline foods you eat. Normally, your blood pH level is between 7.35 and 7.45, which leans alkaline. However, eating acidic foods can send your pH plummeting, along with your health. Luckily, alkaline foods are plentiful and easy to incorporate into your diet.

Step 1

Add more fruit to your diet. Good choices include pears, currants, berries, cantaloupes, cherries, tomatoes, avocados, pineapples, watermelons, rhubarb, bananas, peaches and apples. Even citrus fruits, which are acidic outside of the body, become alkaline once they enter the digestive tract, which means grapefruit and oranges are fine to eat.

Step 2

Use vegetables in your cooking or just eat them raw. Most veggies are alkaline, but a few prime choices include chard, carrots, beets, lettuce, garlic, eggplant, broccoli, peppers, green beans, onions, kale, sweet potatoes, wheat grass, watercress, radishes and mushrooms.

Step 3

Eat more nuts to round out your alkaline diet. A few top choices include chestnuts and almonds.

Step 4

Don't be afraid to spice up your food. All herbs and most spices are alkaline and can be used to add flavor to your mostly alkaline diet. Excellent sources include curry, cinnamon and ginger.

Step 5

Avoid most meats. Many protein sources are highly acidic, such as beef and pork. However, tofu offers a good alternative protein option.
