Careers in the fitness industry can vary from an aerobics instructor, to specialized yoga teacher,to corporate management. Fitness workers may be employed in health clubs, rehabilitation facilities, retirement homes, corporations or with personal clients. Helping people to achieve higher levels of fitness is a rewarding career. In most cases, certain educational requirements must be met before you begin working in the fitness industry.

Certification

In reputable health and fitness clubs, instructors and trainers require certification in the field of fitness to be considered for employment. Fitness trainer certification covers topics such as exercise techniques, physiology, program development and client assessment. The certification process will consist of a written element, and some will have a practical element as well. Other skills such as an outgoing personality, ability to motivate, sensitivity and high fitness level are also important.

Life Saving

Life saving skills must be part of the training and education of anyone who leads others in physical activities. A fitness instructor will routinely lead large groups of people through vigorous exercise routines, and must act quickly if something should go wrong. Certification in CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is usually required to participate in the certification process, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Training on a defibrillator is also beneficial if your place of employment has one on-site.

Specialty Training

If your desire is to teach a class such as kickboxing, yoga or pilates, you will require specialized training in that discipline. Participating in classes and working your way up is the most effective way to gain the knowledge and expertise to teach a specialized class. Certification is available in yoga and pilates if your employer requires it. Many people who teach specialty fitness classes eventually branch out to start a studio or school of their own. Be sure to take the necessary business and marketing courses if you choose this route.

Experience

As a fitness instructor progresses in her position, opportunities may arise to advance to higher positions such as head trainer or group exercise director. Each of these positions has the responsibility of overseeing staff and implementing programs. Some employees will gain more valuable experience and continue on to a head office job, or open a facility of their own.

Business and Marketing

Fitness trainers and instructors are not the only careers in the fitness industry. Many fitness careers center around sales, marketing and management. Working in these fields often requires a bachelor's degree or master's degree depending on the position and organization. The fitness industry represents big business, and just as with executives in any other industry, fitness industry executives must be well educated.
