The Body Ecology Diet was designed by nutritionist Donna Gates to address health issues by treating the body as an ecosystem which requires a natural balance of microorganisms. The diet uses specific foods therapeutically to cleanse the body, protect against disease and restore vitality. The diet employs several principles that require a step-by-step approach to health through food combining and macrobiotics. Foods recommended for the diet include those that are raw, cultured, fermented and as close to a natural state as possible.
Kefir
Eating young coconut kefir is the first therapeutic step in the Body Ecology Diet, according to the Autism Network for Dietary Intervention. The probiotic food is made by combining a kefir starter with fermented juice from young coconuts. The resulting food removes harmful yeast from your body. Kefir also is made from goat milk and organic cow's milk.
Good Fats and Dairy Foods
The Body Ecology Diet recommends changing the fats you consume. Healthier fats included in the diet are coconut oils, extra virgin olive oil, flaxseed oil, pumpkin seed oil and raw butter. Recommended dairy foods include organic milk and yogurt, cream and raw butter.
Meats and Eggs
Eggs, fish, chicken, beef, lamb and turkey are allowed on the Body Ecology Diet. The diet recommends organic eggs and meats and lean meats from free-range and wild-caught sources.
Grains and Seeds
Grains recommended for the Body Ecology Diet are amaranth grain, buckwheat flour, quinoa and millet. Pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds are highly-preferred foods and should be eaten raw.
Vegetables and Fruits
The Body Ecology Diet recommends that vegetables comprise 80 percent of your diet. The diet encourages eating fermented vegetables, raw sauerkraut and other cultured vegetables, steamed vegetables and sea vegetable salads. The diet discourages eating fruit except for black currant, cranberry, lemons, limes and the coconut used to make kefir, according to the Autism Network for Dietary Intervention.
