Stress and tension can exert both physical and mental strain on your body. Massage therapy has been used for centuries to relieve stress and tension. Utilizing a power source such as batteries or an electrical outlet, vibrating massage chairs provide an alternative to traditional massage therapies performed by a masseuse. Massage chairs are available with a variety of adjustable options that you can control by a remote device.

Massage Mode

Massage chairs often allow you to select from different massage modes. The mode determines the type of mechanical roller movement. Selection of a particular mode should be determined by your personal preference. The kneading mode applies pressure and stretches your muscles as the rollers rotate. The roller mode stretches muscles as constant pressure is applied while the rollers move in a vertical direction adjacent to the back. Vibration and tapping modes are used to ease tension and loosen your muscles. Some massage chairs may contain additional mode options, and many chairs can run multiple modes simultaneously.

Heat

Some massage chairs offer the option of adding heat to the massage. Heat offers the benefit of increased blood flow through the dilation of your blood vessels. As your nerves become more stimulated by temperature, they may be less sensitive to other sensations such as pain. Heat may also loosen muscles, leaving them in a more relaxed state.

Speed and Intensity

Most massage chairs will allow you to control the speed and intensity of the massage. By controlling speed, you can dictate the rate of pulsations or how quickly the mechanical rollers vertically travel. The intensity of the massage determines the amount of pressure exerted on you by the mechanical rollers. The appropriate level of speed and intensity is dependent on your individual preference and comfort. Consult your physician before use if you have chronic pain or another medical condition that can be exacerbated by physical pressure.

Massage Area

At times, you may wish to focus on specific regions of the body. This can be accomplished by setting the rollers in a stationary position or for minimal vertical movement. In addition, many massage chairs are available with components capable of massaging the calves and feet.
