Pores are tiny openings on your skin that secrete sebum, or facial oil. According to Kids Health, pores contain hair follicles that often get clogged by excess sebum, dirt and pollutants, causing annoying, unsightly facial problems such as acne. Enlarged pores are visible openings, usually on your chin, forehead and nose that can be a beauty nightmare, especially if coupled with oily skin. You can help to prevent acne and keep your skin and pores clean and minimized by using home remedies made of natural ingredients.

Significance

According to author Annie Berthold-Bond in her book, "Better Basics for the Home: Simple Solutions for Less Toxic Living," astringents help to close your pores, adjust the pH of your skin, remove residue and excess oil and dirt and act as antiseptics. Astringents also act as natural pore minimizers that can reduce the appearance of pores and help keep your skin free of blackheads and other forms of acne.

Benefits

There are numerous benefits to using natural pore astringents and minimizers. Natural ingredients are more cost-effective and are free of preservatives or fragrances that can cause skin irritation in some individuals with delicate or sensitive skin.

Types

Natural astringents tend to be acidic in nature. According to Berthold-Bond, natural astringents include witch hazel, organic cider vinegar or water infused with astringent herbs such as as peppermint or eucalyptus. A natural pore minimizer that can be used after applying an astrigent is whipped egg whites, according to author Lisa Rinna in her book, "Rinnavation: Getting Your Best Life Ever." Egg whites help to tighten and close your pores.

Usage

To use natural pore astringents, wash your face with an oil-free cleanser and gently pat dry. Apply your chosen natural astringent to a cotton ball and gently swipe over your face. To use egg whites as a natural pore minimizer, whip an egg white until its frothy and apply it to cleansed facial skin. Allow it to dry for about 10 minutes and rinse off using warm water.

Warning

Astringents and pore minimizers can be drying, so use sparingly if you suffer from dry skin or have a skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis. While most home remedies are generally safe for use, you should consult your doctor before using home remedies, especially if you suffer from allergies.
