Many issues can cause an enlarged bladder, from birth defects to surgery. However, the most common reasons stem from an underlying medical problem. MayoClinic.com reports that bladder muscles can weaken due to diabetes or other conditions. The urinary tract can also become blocked by a kidney stone, tumor or enlarged prostate, which can cause your bladder to hold too much urine and increase in size.

Certain herbs can help with this problem by treating the underlying issue. If you suspect you have an enlarged bladder, it's important to speak with a medical professional before beginning any alternative treatments. Use caution when trying any herbal remedies.

Saw Palmetto

One major cause of an enlarged bladder is an enlarged prostate. The book "Herbs for Health and Healing" suggests that taking a tincture of saw palmetto berries may reduce the size of your prostate. A study by Dr. W. Vahlensieck concluded that patients taking saw palmetto saw a reduction of symptoms including over-sized bladder and incontinence within three months. Saw palmetto works by blocking the absorption of a naturally-produced hormone that causes inflammation within the prostate. Use caution when trying saw palmetto.

Nettle

According to a study done at the Department of Phytotherapy in Paris, France, nettle root works as a diuretic, allowing urine to pass more easily and reducing overflow incontinence, a side effect of an enlarged bladder. Your bladder is likely to reduce in size because it will not be able to hold as much urine due to the diuretic effects. The root of the nettle plant is easiest when taken in tea form and may reduce your symptoms within three weeks. Exercise caution when using nettle.

Cranberry

Another cause for an enlarged bladder may be due to an infection in the urinary tract. An infection can make it more difficult and painful to pass your urine, causing your bladder to swell with excess fluid. Though most urinary tract infections require prescription antibiotics to heal completely, drinking cranberry juice may help to clear out the infection. Dr. Robert Mclaren, a urologist with MayoClinic.com, says that cranberry has mild anti-septic properties that are important for urinary and bladder health.
