Maintaining a healthy diet can be tough, especially when trying to find a balance between foods that aren't high in cholesterol, but are alkaline. High cholesterol can boost your chances of getting heart disease, and eating too many acidic foods is believed to lead to diseases such as cancer. Luckily, you can put a stop to this by adopting a diet for lowering cholesterol and boosting your alkaline food intake.
Step 1
Avoid oils that are high in saturated fats, which are known to raise your bad cholesterol, or LDL levels. Stick to unsaturated fats such as flax, hemp seed, safflower and olive oils to reduce cholesterol levels and to stay clear of acidic alternatives such as butter or corn oil.
Step 2
Boost your intake of fresh produce. Consider having five servings of fresh vegetables and fruits a day to shift your diet to the alkaline side. A healthy blood pH is 7.4, which is just a tad alkaline and right where you want to be.
Step 3
Eat proteins that are low in fat and cholesterol, but highly alkaline such as fish and legumes. Stay away from high cholesterol and acidic alternatives such as egg yolks, red meat and pork, which raise LDL and acid levels in the body.
Step 4
Stick to low-fat dairy products. A few good options include cottage cheese, yogurt or skim milk. These products are not very acidic and help keep your bad cholesterol levels low.
Step 5
Keep snacks healthy. Fruits and vegetables make the best kind of snacks. Salt-free whole grain crackers are another good snack option.
