Heparin sodium is an anticoagulant medication used to help prevent blood clots, but it can be used as a treatment for blood clots as well. Heparin is also used in central venous access devices, or central lines such as Hickman catheters, PICC lines and port-a-caths to prevent blood clots from forming when the line is not in use. If you experience side effects while on heparin, you should contact your doctor.
Bleeding
Since heparin is an anticoagulant, meaning that it helps prevent the blood from forming clots, you may experience bleeding when injured. Normally blood will clot after a short time, but when taking heparin, it may be difficult to stop bleeding. Additionally, you may notice blood in your urine or with bowel movements. Nosebleeds may also occur. If any of these side effects take place, you should contact the prescribing physician immediately for treatment.
Infusion Reaction
Occasionally, patients may experience a reaction when heparin is administered directly into the circulatory system via an IV infusion. Drugs.com explains that symptoms of this type of reaction include nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath and sweating. If any of these side effects occur, notify your doctor or health care provider immediately.
Allergic Reaction
Patients may experience an allergic reaction after receiving heparin. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itchiness, difficulty breathing and swelling of the airways. These reactions are serious and emergency medical assistance is needed immediately.
Numbness and Pain
Other side effects that may occur with heparin include chest pain, lower back pain, headaches and stomach pain. Numbness in the hands and feet may also occur. These side effects are all considered serious and should be reported to your doctor immediately.
Injection Site Pain
If heparin is given via injection, you may experience pain and redness at the site of the injection. These side effects will diminish after 24 to 48 hours.
