Magnesium deficiency can lead to abnormal heart rhythms, coronary spasms and seizures. The average American does not get the recommended amounts of magnesium through diet alone. Taking magnesium supplements, including magnesium malate chelate, can avoid deficiencies that you may be experiencing due to an insufficient dietary intake.

Description

Magnesium is a mineral that performs many functions within your body. It helps maintain proper muscle and nerve function, promotes steady heartbeat, supports a healthy immune system, and plays a role in maintaining normal blood pressure and energy metabolism. Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral and is the fourth most abundant mineral in your body. Approximately 50 percent of the magnesium that exists in your body is found in your bone, and about 1 percent is found in your blood.

Magnesium Malate Chelate 500 mg

Magnesium malate chelate is a magnesium supplement that binds some magnesium to malic acid and the rest of the magnesium is chelated to the amino acid. Magnesium melate chelate 500 mg delivers 500 mg of magnesium to your body with each dose and is used to maintain adequate magnesium in the body.

Administration

Magnesium malate chelate 500 mg comes in tablet, liquid and capsule form. Take the supplement with a full glass of water and ask your pharmacist if you need clarification of your doctor directions. If you are taking the liquid form of magnesium malate chelate, use a dose-measuring spoon or cup to ensure proper dosing. Magnesium malate chelate should be stored at room temperature and kept away from moisture and heat. If you forget to take a dose, consume the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it will soon be time for the next dose, in which case you skip the missed dose and continue supplement on your regular schedule.

Side Effects

Stop taking magnesium malate chelate and seek emergency medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, tightening in your throat, hives or swelling of your tongue, lips or face. These symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction. Consumption of too much magnesium malate chelate may result in diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Magnesium toxicity can occur if your kidney loses the ability to remove excess magnesium. Other signs of excess magnesium include appetite loss, muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure and change in mental health.

Considerations

More than 300 biochemical reactions in the body need magnesium to occur. Taking large doses of laxatives and antacids that contain magnesium puts you at risk of experiencing magnesium toxicity. Make sure that your physician is aware of all over-the-counter and prescription medications that you consume before you begin any supplement regiment.
