Bowflex and P90X resistance bands are strength training equipment. The Bowflex is a home gym machine that uses flexible rods, various handles and a weight bench to facilitate the workout. P90X resistance bands are rubber tubing with handles that are five feet long. The Bowlflex and P90X will challenge your muscle fibers to strengthen and tone your body.

Bowflex

The Bowflex uses flexible rods to provide you with resistance. Bowflex designed this Powerrod technology so that when you execute the movements, the rods bend and straighten, resembling a bow. You can set the resistance amount by choosing one rod or a combination of rods. As you perform the exercises, the amount of resistance feels lighter at the beginning of the exercise than at the end. This allows for easier strength gains for beginners and exercise variation for experienced lifters.

P90X Resistance Bands

The P90X resistance bands are latex tubes with handles. You stretch the bands to perform various strength training exercises. You can use a pulling motion to stretch the bands, such as when performing an arm curl, and can also use a pressing motion, such as when moving through a chest press exercise. The resistance level of the band remains constant as you exercise; and muscles are challenged as you resist the band as it returns to its pre-stretched state.

Affordability

As of October 2010, the Bowflex training systems cost between $649 and $2,499. The machine comes with a five- to 12-year warranty, depending on which system you purchase.

The P90X training system, as of October 2010, costs $120, plus the cost of resistance bands, which range from $10 to $20 each. The P90X system has a 90-day money-back guarantee. Resistance bands typically last from one to two years with regular use, and can be found at sporting goods stores.

Considerations

A Bowflex system is a large piece of equipment, and is not easily transported. You will need to designate a space within your home for the Bowflex. P90X resistance bands are small and will fit into a sandwich bag for easy storage and transportation.

Insights

According to the American Council on Exercise, when you perform strength training consistently, you should feel a 20- to 40-percent increase in strength within several months.

Your muscles respond when increased demand is placed on them. Your muscles also need a day of rest in between strength training workouts. Use caution when strength training, and seek out the guidance of a certified fitness professional so that you will get the best results and avoid injuries.

If you have a latex allergy, purchase a latex-free resistance band.
