Life as a teen is hard enough without factoring in a weight problem. Many teens want to lose weight, but lack the skills or knowledge to make a permanent change. The constant availability of fast food doesn't make it any easier for teens to get healthy. California weight loss camps not only help teens lose weight, but teach them the skills to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
What You Learn
Anyone can follow a fad diet for a few days, but in order to maintain significant weight loss, you must learn healthy habits. At weight loss camp, teens will learn about nutrition. At Wellspring La Jolla, campers will take cooking classes, and learn how to make healthy meals for themselves and their families. They will learn how to say "no" to bad foods and unhealthy snacks. Teens will learn how to replace their favorite foods with healthier options. They will find out about fitness and how to burn fat. Your child will learn how to manage stress in a healthy way. They will find out why they eat and how to cope without using food. At the Wellspring Academy in Reedley, California, campers are expected to take elective courses as well. The academy promises to help increase your child's GPA, while teaching them healthy habits.
What You Do
Instead of running on a treadmill for hours, or spending an hour on an elliptical, California weight loss camps offer a variety of outdoor activities. At Camp La Jolla campers can kayak, swim, rock climb, hike and bike. All weight loss camps expect campers to take fitness classes. At the Biggest Loser Resort in Malibu, teens can expect to take yoga, aerobics, strength training, indoor cycling, and kickboxing classes. At Camp La Jolla, staff take teens on field trips to the beach and theme parks. The goal is to give teens a fun summer experience while they work towards their fitness goals. Teens will be expected to work out multiple times a day each day. They will learn that exercise is a big part of maintaining weight loss. Teens will also be expected to follow a strict sleeping schedule.
What You Eat
While at weight loss camp, teens will eat low-calorie and low-fat foods. They will learn how to get the daily nutrients and vitamins they need through the right foods. Sugar and carbohydrate intake will also be significantly decreased. At Camp La Jolla, chefs prepare foods like chicken nuggets, brownies, pizza and fries decreasing the calories and fat in each. Campers will eat three meals and two healthy snacks a day, to keep their metabolism working throughout the day and into the night. All meals are prepared by registered dietitians. Most camps require guests follow a 1,200 calorie daily meal plan. At the Biggest Loser Fitness Resort, guests can expect menus planned by the same nutritionists used on the TV program.
What You Pay For
When you sign your teen up at Camp La Jolla, you will be paying for an all-inclusive experience. Accommodations, food, activities and classes are included in the sign up cost. The cost of field trips is also included. Your money will also go toward cooking lessons and counseling sessions. At Wellspring Camp La Jolla, a two-week stay costs around $5,000, based on 2010 rates. If you enroll your child at the Wellspring Academy in Reedley, you will also be paying for elective courses.
Where You Stay
Most weight loss camps offer suitable accommodations. Some weight loss camps are located on college campuses, and others are located at resorts.
