Treatment for Chronic Sinus Pain

Chronic sinus pain, or sinusitis, is the condition in which the sinuses, or nasal cavities, become infected or inflamed. People who have asthma, a compromised immune system or seasonal allergies have a higher risk of developing chronic sinus problems rather than the occasional sinus infection. Treatment can include both medications and home remedies such as warm compresses to relieve the pain.

Statistics

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that in 2006, 15 million people were diagnosed with chronic sinusitis.

Goals

The goal of treatment is to eliminating the infection that causes the discomfort, reduce inflammation of the nasal passages and promote drainage.

Medical Treatment

Antibiotics can relieve chronic sinus pain stemming from bacterial sinusitis. Corticosteroid medications reduce inflammation. Blocked nasal passages that lead to sinus infections and chronic pain may need to be corrected through surgery.

Lifestyle Factors

Drinking lots of water helps thin out secretions and encourages appropriate drainage. Sleeping at least eight hours each night helps the body fight infections.

Considerations

Sinus infections that are not treated could lead to eye infections, loss of vision and even life-threatening blood clots.
