Pregnancy can bring about a host of discomforts and challenges as well as joy. One of the common symptoms that pregnant women experience is headaches. Women who are prone to migraines may find that their symptoms increase dramatically or completely dissipate during pregnancy, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Fluctuating hormones are to blame. Some migraine medications are approved for use during pregnancy, while others should be avoided.
Safe Medications
Acetaminophen is generally safe for use during pregnancy and may be used to treat migraines. Pregnant women and their obstetricians should make the decision together whether the benefit outweighs the risk of the drug passing through the placenta, especially with doses higher than 1,000 mg. Prescription medications, including Imitrex, Naratriptan and Zolmitriptan, may be prescribed as needed.
Unsafe Medications
Migraine medications such as dihydroergotamine (brand name Migranal) and ergotamine are not safe for pregnant women to use. Medical experts at DrSpock.com report that these drugs can cause the uterus to contract. Over-the-counter (OTC) medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen are also not recommended, as the active ingredient may cause birth defects if taken in the last trimester. Women should avoid migraine-specific OTC drugs that contain more than 300 mg of caffeine as well.
Prevention
Women who develop frequent or long-lasting migraine headaches during pregnancy may opt to take an approved migraine medication as a preventive measure. This method is recommended only if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Natural Pain Management
Natural forms of pain management are preferred over prescribing medications for migraines during pregnancy. Resting in a dark room or using cool compresses may take the edge off of the pain from a migraine.
Danger Signs
Pregnant women should contact their doctors immediately if they experience blurred vision, develop a fever or cannot get rid of a migraine or other headache, regardless of what type of medication they are taking.
