Depression is a condition marked by pervasive feelings of sadness, loss of mental focus, fatigue and loss of interest in personal and work activities, according to Dr. James Balch and Phyllis Balch, authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Anxiety disorders can produce symptoms ranging from chronic feelings of uneasiness to severe, debilitating panic attacks. The Balches and other alternative healing advocates believe that dietary choices may help alleviate the symptoms of these conditions.

Dietary therapy should not replace medical or psychological treatment for depression or anxiety. Check with your physician before altering your diet to address the symptoms of anxiety or depression.

Zinc-Rich Foods

According to the Balches, zinc is an important mineral for treating both depression and anxiety. This trace mineral may help soothe and protect the central nervous system, which may help reduce feelings of sadness and panic. Zinc is found in foods such as egg yolks, beans, mushrooms, shellfish, sunflower seeds, kelp and alfalfa sprouts. Add these foods to your diet to help combat the effects of depression and anxiety.

Celery Seed

Celery seed is an herb that is commonly used to flavor casseroles, soups and other dishes. This herb is commonly available in Western supermarkets. According to Micheal Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs," the oils contained in celery seed may have a tranquilizing, mood-stabling effect that may help ease anxiety and depression. Contact your doctor before adding celery seed to your diet. This herb is a diuretic and thus may deplete levels of potassium, which is an essential mineral for optimal health.

Whole Grains

Add whole-grain products, such as whole-wheat pasta and bread, barley, rolled oats and millet, to your diet. According to the Balches, whole-grain products stimulate the brain's production of serotonin, a mood-enhancing chemical. Enhanced serotonin levels may help combat the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Tryophan

Lean meats, such as turkey and salmon, contain tryptophan. This chemical is linked to enhanced mood and may help alleviate feelings of depression. Turkey and salmon are also rich sources of protein, which can help boost your energy, making it easier for you to complete daily tasks and enjoy personal and social activities.
