Medifast Soup

Medifast is a portion-controlled, clinically proven weight-loss program, according to Medifast, Inc. It provides individual packets of food to offer busy dieters a healthier alternative to fast food. People with a body mass index, or BMI, over 25 who need a simple, fast way to lose weight may benefit from using Medifast, advises the East Carolina University School of Medicine. Medifast meals and snacks include shakes, eggs, bars, oatmeal, fruit drinks, pudding, teas, pretzels and cheese puffs. As part of its weight loss program, Medifast offers a selection of regular and creamy soups.

Significance

Medifast soups, considered a Medifast meal, offer low-calorie, low-fat options with a balance of protein and carbohydrates. These meals also offer as many as 24 essential vitamins and minerals per serving to help dieters meet their nutritional needs while losing weight.

Preparation

Medifast soups come in individual packets. Mix with water to reconstitute. Microwave, according to the provided directions, or refrigerate until you are ready to cook it. Cook on the stovetop by mixing with the appropriate amount of water and heating on medium heat until boiling; let stand for three minutes before eating. Prepare Medifast soups no more than a couple hours before eating. Mix your Medifast soup before eating to mix ingredients thoroughly. Use refrigerated pre-mixed Medifast soups within two days.

Types

Medifast soup types include chicken noodle, chicken and wild rice, Maryland crab, cream of broccoli, cream of chicken and cream of tomato. Maryland crab and chicken noodle are flavored with Maryland crab and chicken. Chicken and wild soup contains rice, white meat chicken, carrots, peas, celery, shiitake mushrooms and onions in a herb-seasoned chicken broth. Cream soups contain milk and vegetables. All soups contain several different seasonings and preservatives.

Nutrition

Medifast soups contain daily values of such vitamins and minerals as vitamin A and C, calcium, iron, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, biotin, phosphorus, iodine, magnesium, zine, selenium, copper, manganese and chromium. These soups contain under 2 g of fat per serving and up to 5 g of fiber per serving. Sodium levels do not exceed 390 mg. Each Medifast soup contains between 9 g and 15 g of protein.

Considerations

Medifast soups have an 18-month best-if-used-by date printed on the product. While Medifast soups do not typically "go bad," the vitamins and minerals contained in the mix starts to lose its potency after this timeframe. Store Medifast soups in a cool, dry and clean area.

Chicken and wild rice, cream of tomato and maryland crab soups are certified gluten-free. Medifast creamy soups are soy-free, low-lactose and caffeine-free. Most Medifast soups contain milk and wheat. Medifast soups are processed in a facility that uses eggs, fish and shellfish.
