The Slim Quick Cleanse is supposed to be used as a jump-start for your weight loss efforts. You take it for a week. The formulation contains a variety of herbs, many of which can cause side effects, interact with medicines or worsen health conditions. That makes it especially important to check with a health care professional before trying this product, even if you enjoy excellent health.
Claims
The manufacturers of SlimQuick claim that the product will boost your metabolism, increase your energy, cleanse your colon, balance your blood sugar, eliminate toxins and improve the function of your digestive tract. You take this product, which comes in capsule form, before lunch and before bed with water for seven days.
Potential
This product includes hoodia gordonii, which is popular among weight-loss supplements. This African herb is purported to be an appetite suppressant, though no reliable scientific evidence backs its use for this purpose, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The health effects of this herb are unknown due to lack of study, so there's not information on potential side effects, risks and drug interactions.
Function
The SlimQuick formulation also includes better-studied substances including green tea extract, which is meant to boost metabolism, and senna, which is meant to help in your cleansing efforts. Taking green tea extract may help moderately overweight people shed pounds, but it doesn't help in keeping that weight off, according to MedlinePlus. The caffeine content of the tea can cause side effects including nervousness, sleep problems, headaches, vomiting, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, confusion and convulsions. If you ingest it in very high doses it can actually be fatal. Senna is a laxative that's approved by Germany's Commission E, that country's regulatory body for herbs, to treat constipation. Its side effects can include kidney damage, irregular heartbeat, vomiting, cramping, flatulence and diarrhea.
Features
The manufacturers do give you a seven-day meal plan as well as a calorie chart and a meal log that you can use as you work toward your goals. SlimQuick also promotes an exercise program that includes weight training and walking.
Warning
You need to be especially careful with this product if you take medications or have a health condition. For example, the senna in SlimQuick can increase the risk for hypokalemia--low blood potassium levels--when it's taken with a host of medications including insulin, etozolin, prednisone and xiparmide. It can raise risk for irregular heartbeat when consumed with other medicines such as acebutolol. Senna may worsen an electrolyte imbalance, gastrointestinal ailments, heart ailments and diarrhea or dehydration.
Green tea can raise your risk for bleeding or bruising when taken with drugs like ibuprofen or warfarin. It also can have unpredictable effects on your blood sugar levels when taken with medicine like insulin and raise the risk for high blood pressure when taken with drugs such as ephedrine. Green tea's caffeine can worsen anxiety disorders, bleeding disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease and ulcers, and it can trigger irregular heartbeats.
