Protein is a macronutrient, along with carbohydrates and fat; each macronutrient has a specific calorie content per gram. Knowing how many calories are in each gram of protein allows you to make informed dietary decisions.
Calories
According to the book "Nutrition for Health, Fitness and Sport" by Melvin H. Williams, protein contains four calories per gram.
Features
Protein comprises 20 amino acids. Eight essential amino acids must be obtained from your diet, while 12 nonessential amino acids are synthesized in the body. All amino acids must be present for proper protein function.
Function
Protein plays many important roles in your body. Protein forms cellular structure, regulates metabolism, builds muscle and repairs tissues.
Sources
Plant sources of protein include beans, nuts and whole grains; animal sources of protein include meat, dairy and eggs.
Requirements
The National Strength and Conditioning Association suggests the average adult consume 0.8 g of daily protein per kilogram of body weight. Inadequate protein intake will result in muscle breakdown within your body.
