Cod liver oil is most commonly taken in the form of a nutritional supplement. It is made from the fatty tissues that can be found in cod fish livers. At one time, cod liver oil supplements were used primarily for kids, but they are now growing in popularity among people of all ages. Taken as directed, cod liver oil supplements provide health benefits while exposing you to few risks. Still, check with your health care provider before taking any supplement.

Dermatitis

Dermatitis is a skin disease in which the skin becomes inflamed, according to MayoClinic.com. Types of dermatitis include eczema, atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis. Dermatitis causes the skin to become itchy, red and swollen. Using omega-3 fatty acids, such as those included in cod liver oil, is an effective remedy for treating and controlling dermatitis. MayoClinic.com states that the anti-inflammatory properties found in cod liver oil can improve skin conditions cause by dermatitis. The direct application of cod liver oil to your skin rash may provide some relief to this skin condition.

Heart Health

The American Heart Association states that coronary heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death among women in the United States. Strong scientific evidence shows that taking a daily omega-3 supplement, such as cod liver oil, significantly reduces the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, according to MayoClinic.com. Cod liver oil supplements can be helpful even if there is a previous history of heart disease.

Anti-Inflammatory

Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis cause the joints to become inflamed. According to MayoClinic.com, a number or research studies have shown that taking a daily cod liver oil supplement may help limit the inflammation associated with these diseases, especially when taken in combination with anti-inflammatory medications. Crohn's disease and other inflammatory bowel diseases may also benefit from cod liver oil supplements, but additional research is required to fully clarify the effects of the supplement.
