How to Use a One Touch Ultra 2

The OneTouch Ultra 2 is a hand-held machine that measures blood sugar. It is generally used by people with diabetes who are trying to control their blood sugar levels. Keeping glucose levels as close to normal as possible helps diabetics maintain good health and avoid complications.
The advantage of the OneTouch Ultra 2 is that it requires only a speck of blood for testing, which can be obtained from a finger, palm or forearm.

Testing Blood Sugar

Step 1

Insert a testing strip into the top of the meter to turn it on. Be sure the strip's meter bars are facing you. The meter will flash on and display the code from the previous test. If it is the wrong code for this test strip, simply push the up or down arrows until the correct code number is displayed.

Step 2

Wait and watch for the meter to flash "Apply Blood." Take off the OneTouch UltraSoft cap and slide in a lancet. As the lancet clicks in, gently twist off its protective liner and then replace the OneTouch UltraSoft cap. If you are getting blood from your palm or forearm, follow the same procedure but use the OneTouch UltraClear device instead.

Step 3

Adjust the depth setting of the the OneTouch UltraSost and UltraClear lancet pens if previous blood sticks have been insufficient. Hold the pen-like device firmly against the side of your finger, palm or forearm and press the "Release" button. After the poke, gently massage the area to obtain a small amount of blood. Don't squeeze excessively or you can alter the fluid concentrations in the blood sample.

Once you have a drop of blood, hold it still against the edge of the test strip for five seconds until the machine confirms test results.

Step 4

Take the cap off your OneTouch UltraSoft or UltraClear pen and eject the lancet by pushing forward on the ejection/cocking control. Eject the lancet directly into a biohazard container. Replace the cap.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wash your hands before and after testing, and do your testing in a quiet, clean environment. It can take concentration not to skip any steps. Glucose test results are stored in the meter and can be downloaded into your computer as well. If you are having trouble reading the results, press and hold the "OK" button for two seconds. This will turn the backlight on or off.
  • Using the OneTouch Ultra 2 should not replace visits with your doctor.
