Testosterone is a hormone produced by the human body. There are cases in which some men produce excessive levels of testosterone. Different factors may contribute to this hormonal over-production. When your testosterone levels are high, you may experience symptoms of abnormal physical functions. There are treatments for this condition.

Function

Testosterone is a natural steroid in the body. In men, it is produced primarily by the testes and in smaller amounts by the adrenal glands. According to Vitamins & Health Supplements Guide, testosterone contributes to the development of the male reproductive organs, facial hair growth, deepening of the voice and increased muscle and bone mass.

Causes

The primary cause of excessive testosterone in men is an increase in the natural production of this hormone. This increase may be due to excessive exercise, over-consumption of high testosterone foods such as red meat and oysters, and genetics. A secondary cause of excessive testosterone levels is the use of testosterone supplements. These supplements are referred to as anabolic steroids.

Symptoms

Excessive testosterone may cause irreversible male pattern baldness. Aggressive behavior may also develop. If your excessive testosterone levels are caused by the use of anabolic steroids, liver damage may occur. Other symptoms include infertility, enlarged prostate and prostate cancer. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, a higher serum-free testosterone level is associated with an increased risk for prostate cancer.

Treatment

The treatment for excessive testosterone is determined by the cause. Lifestyle and dietary changes can assist in the alleviation of this condition if your levels are not too high. High levels, however, may require medication and perhaps surgery. Herbal supplements may also be an alternative. Before deciding on either treatment, consult a qualified physician.

Recommendations

Generally, a healthy diet may be beneficial in the management of high testosterone levels. Furthermore, since stress may enhance the production of testosterone, stress-relieving techniques such as yoga and meditation may also be helpful in this regard. It is better to evaluate your condition with your physician, however, and get your testosterone levels assessed properly.
