Mayo Clinic defines feminine menopause as the final end of menstruation. It will usually occur one year after the woman's last menstrual period, about 51 years of age. Although menopause is not a medical illness but a natural biological process, the symptoms that come with it can sometimes be severe and will require some forms of treatment. The symptoms of feminine menopause include hot flashes, vaginal dryness and thinning hair. Several widely used supplements can be used for feminine menopause.
Black Cohosh
A study published in the December 2005 issue of "American Journal of Medicine" lists black cohosh as a supplement for feminine menopause. Black cohosh as a member of the buttercup family which is a plant native to North America. Extracts are taken from the underground stems and roots of the plant. These extracts can be used to treat the hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness that occur as symptoms of feminine menopause. Women who have liver disorders are strongly advised against using black cohosh as it will aggravate the condition.
Red Clover
The said study in the "American Journal of Medicine," reports red clover is a supplement for feminine menopause. The University of Maryland Medical Center describes the red clover as a perennial herb whose red flowers are dried for therapeutic use, it is also a rich source of isoflavones. Isoflavones are chemicals found in plants that act in a way similar to natural estrogen produced in the female's body. These isoflavones act to significantly reduce hot flashes in women going through menopause.
Soy Isoflavones
According to the Linus Pauling Institute from the Oregon State University, soy isoflavones are some of the supplements for feminine menopause that are widely used today. Isoflavones are in a class of chemicals called phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are plant derived compounds that have been observed to have estrogenic activity. The highest sources of isoflavones for human consumption come from soybeans and soy products. The main symptom that makes menopausal women seek medical attention is hot flashes and increasing soy isoflavone intake causes a significant reduction in hot flashes.
