Fitness enthusiasts participate in a wide-range of workout programs such as cardio, weight training or group classes. Living a busy lifestyle can make it difficult to go to the fitness club for a workout. As a result, home fitness programs have been developed to provide workouts that can be completed in the comforts of your home. P90X, developed by Tony Horton, is a home-based program using minimal equipment that provides a total-body workout.

Features

Most home fitness workout programs feature one or two videos, but P90X has 12 separate workouts placed on its own video. The workouts are split into body parts such as abs, chest and back, shoulders and arms, legs and arms, back and biceps. Other workout videos include stretching and yoga to improve flexibility while the plyometrics, kenpo and cardio videos focus on improving endurance and stamina.

Time Frame

P90X is setup on a 90-day schedule that progresses through each video and the series of workouts. You start the program by building basic strength in the core movements and increase in intensity throughout the program. As you rotate through the workouts, you can adjust videos to match your personal schedule or to complement your fitness level. Each video and workout takes approximately one hour to complete and includes the warm-up, workout and cool-down.

Extras

Along with the12 workout videos, P90X offers several other resources to track your fitness goals and to keep you motivated. The three-phase nutrition plan and dietary supplement plan is designed to promote fat loss while maximizing energy levels. A workout calendar can be used to set fitness goals, track progress and stay motivated. You can also access a free online resource that features peer support, motivation forums and a chat room with fitness experts.

Benefits

While the primary benefits of P90X revolve around fitness, you can personalize the workout program to match your fitness goals. Common benefits include weight loss, increase in lean muscle and strength, reduced body fat and an overall increase in fitness, endurance and stamina. The benefits come as a result of the "muscle confusion" technique that improves the results from the workouts. This technique prevents the body from reaching a plateau while keeping you excited and motivated.

Expert Insight

Tony Horton leads and instructs you through each workout video but he also gives several fitness tips for maximizing your results. Add variety to the workouts and always have a plan before each workout. Setup a workout schedule for the upcoming week based on work and personal commitments to stay consistent with the workouts. Always maintain a high level of intensity during the workouts to keep the heart rate elevated to maximize fat loss. Playing other sports such as basketball, hiking or cycling can improve balance and coordination while complementing the workout videos.
