How to Rid Yourself of Ringworm

Ringworm is caused by the fungus tinea. Tinea also is responsible for such conditions as athlete's foot and jock itch. Tinea infections are almost never serious or life-threatening, but they can be uncomfortable. These infections can be contracted by touching an infected person or by touching damp surfaces where the fungus is growing. Fungal infection such as these can be treated with antifungal medications.

Step 1

Apply topical anti-fungal treatments. There are many different creams an ointments that contain antifungal agents, including miconazole, terbinafine, and ciclopirox. These medications are available in over-the-counter and prescription strength formulations.

Step 2

Take oral antifungal medications. If the ringworm is severe or if it is in an area that is difficult to reach, then oral medications, such as ketoconazole and fluconazole are indicated. These medications can only be obtained with a prescription.

Step 3

Use medicated shampoo. Medicated shampoos that contain selenium sulfide can be used to treat ringworm on the scalp. These special shampoos, which can be bought over-the-counter or with a prescription, should be put in the hair as normal, left in for five minutes, and then rinsed out. Use medicated shampoos only two or three times a week to avoid damaging the hair and scalp.
