The prostate, a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder, is a significant component to the male reproductive system. Aging men may experience prostate enlargement, which can cause problems if the gland presses on the urethra. To maintain prostate health and treat complications, men may turn to herbs as an alternative or complementary therapy. Talk to your doctor before you experiment with any herbal remedy, as health risks and drug interactions are possible.

Saw Palmetto

Derived from the ripe berries of the saw palmetto plant, saw palmetto is a commonly used herb for prostate health. MedlinePlus reports that saw palmetto has been used by millions of men to relieve prostate symptoms and is often recommended as an alternative to medicine. Studies regarding the herbs efficacy are mixed, however. Though the herb is generally well tolerated, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine reports that mild side effects such as stomach discomfort may occur.

Pygeum

Pygeum is an herbal remedy that contains extracts from the bark of the pygeum tree, a 10 to 25-foot tree that grows in Africa. Pygeum is named by MayoClinic.com as an herbal treatment for enlarged prostate. The anti-inflammatory compounds in the herb may help reduce the symptoms of enlarged prostate. According to a study published in February 2007 in the journal "Endocrine," pygeum may be a useful supplement for people at high risk for developing prostate cancer. Side effects are mild and may include stomach upset.

Stinging Nettle

The root of the stinging nettle plant is used in various herbal products to relieve the symptoms of enlarged prostate. Though the herb is not proven to decrease the size of a man's prostate, it is thought to help slow the growth of prostate cells and in turn relieve common symptoms such as increased urination, reduced urinary flow and incomplete emptying of the bladder. MayoClinic.com reports that stinging nettle is a potentially effective option for treating prostate enlargement.
