Classic cross-country skiing is one of three different types of Nordic skiing. Classic technique involves opposing leg to arm motion in a forward direction. Within classic cross-country skiing, you can find gender-specific training guidelines and equipment, including skis. Women's classic cross-country skis have the same considerations that a gender-neutral ski would have, such as bindings, poles and boots and whether to use waxable or waxless skis.

A "Woman's Ski"

Some manufacturers add feminine details to the ski, which may appeal to women consumers. Other manufactures boast the concept of "made for women by women" concept in order for you, the consumer, to feel that the needs of your body shape, size and athleticism are taken more into account. In general, women's classic cross-country skis weigh less and may be shorter. With proper fitting, gender-neutral skis can also meet your classic cross-country ski needs.

Proper Women's Fitting

To determine the appropriate length of your women's classic ski, experts at REI suggest that you size your ski from the heel of your hand extended above your head. That is where your ski should reach. Your classic cross-country ski has also has a width. This is the length from one edge to the other. It is measured at the narrowest part of your ski. The narrower the ski, the more speed you will generate. Consider your skills for stability and control when determining proper width.

Waxable or Waxless Women's Classic Skis

Waxable skis are skis that can be treated with wax to improve gripping and gliding of skiing. Waxable skis do not have their own grip pattern on the base. Apply glide wax only to the tips and tails of your cross country skis. Waxless skis are actually not entirely "waxless." They do, however, have added traction to the middle of the ski, which allows for better gripping. This added traction feature looks similar to scales on a fish.

Bindings

Manufacturers promoting "ladies bindings" for classic cross-country skis place emphasize on feminine-appearance rather than any difference in the function of the binding. Power and control, the role of the binding, are no better or worse in a gender-neutral binding. Bindings can be adjustable to boot size so that you do not have to redrill your skis for different size feet.

Ski Packages

You will also need boots and poles. Poles should be sized to rest just below your armpit. The handle should feel comfortable to loosely grip and release. Look for boots that provide comfort and warmth. You will want a boot that offers forward flexibility and that comes up about midankle. Often gender-specific classic cross-country ski packages are made gender-specific because of the boot. Packages may provide a better deal.
