The markets are overflowing with types of ab belts, all of them claiming to provide a flatter, toned stomach and even six pack abs. Consumer opinion remains divided on ab belts, but a few brands seem to be doing quite well. Most people agree that they cannot lose weight with the help of ab belts alone. Instead, a complete body workout is required for rock-star abs.

Types

According to Ab Belts, the belts can be divided into three main categories. First are the electronic muscle stimulation, or EMS belts, which send electric pulses to the stomach and replicate the effects of ab crunching. Next, vibrating ab belts work on the principle that the vibrating action can help to break up fats in the abdomen. These are among the least popular ab belts. Finally, sauna belts cause the stomach to sweat, claiming that this action can break down fat. However, these have been proved to be ineffective. Other types include flex belts and contour belts.

Effectiveness

Consumers, fitness experts and medical experts are divided on the effectiveness of using ab belts for losing weight. Obviously, an overall weight loss is not possible without actually exercising the muscles, no matter what the machine claims. Some people have had success with EMS belts and there are quite a few EMS belts that have been approved by the FDA.

Price

Most ab belts are priced above $50. Sauna belts and vibrating belts could cost less, though they have largely been proved ineffective. The EMS belts use gel pads which need to be replaced after every month. The cost of the gel pads is around $30, which makes the belts an expensive investment.

Use

Unlike what the manufacturers say, consumer opinion is that the belts must be used for several months in order to see any noticeable change. In addition to using the belt, a cardio workout is required, along with changes to the diet. It is not know if toned abs result from the workouts and a healthy diet or the ab belt.

Cons

Some people find the belts uncomfortable to use. The price is also a deterrent for most people. In addition, Amazon reviewers have written that ab belts are ideal for relatively fit people who want to tone their abs, but they are ineffective for obese or heavyweight folks looking to lose weight only by virtue of the ab belt.
