Holistic diets are increasingly being incorporated into medical care because they involve all aspects of life, including getting regular exercise and fighting stress. Some foods have non-biased research that supports their ability to prevent cancer or reduce the chance of cancer coming back. Discuss new supplements and diet plans with your medical provider.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are the cornerstone of many healthy diets. These grains, such as Irish oatmeal, whole wheat and rye bread, contain contain fiber, antioxidants and phytoestrogens, all of which are considered anti-cancer compounds.

Broccoli Family

Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower contain a phytonutrient called indole-3-carbinol, which may combat breast cancer by eliminating cancer-supporting estrogens in the body. A diet rich in these vegetables may also help prevent lung, prostate and bladder cancers, according to Stanford University's Health Improvement Program.

Flaxseed

Flaxseed is high in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants called lignans, all of which may reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Berries

Berries, especially raspberries, blueberries and cranberries, have high levels of powerful antioxidants called anthocyanins. Additionally, strawberries are loaded with ellagic acid, another cancer-fighting compound.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes have high levels of lycopene, which can reduce the risk of prostate cancer. This compound is more concentrated in canned and processed tomatoes. The U.S. government has also developed purple tomatoes that have more anthocyanins.

Garlic

Garlic is an ancient wellness herb. Scientists say that garlic may improve immune function due to allium compounds, also known as diallyl sulfides. A heightened immune system fights off cancer cells and can slow tumor growth.
