Fitness trainers represent a growing segment of the fitness industry. They offer personalized recommendations to clients of various ages and health conditions. Many health clubs, gyms and other workout facilities require fitness trainers to be certified. Knowledge of certifying organizations and the ways to obtain these certifications online can help you meet your goals.

Significance

Fitness trainers tend to work with smaller groups of exercisers than group fitness instructors. At any given session, a fitness trainer may work with one, two or three exercisers, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Duties of a trainer include instruction in safe exercise techniques, development of exercise programs, assistance in client goal setting and motivation in order to help clients reach fitness goals. While the amount of training needed to work as a personal trainer depends on the area where you are seeking employment, most exercise facilities require certification.

Certifying Organizations

Numerous organizations offer online fitness certifications to those who participate in online workshops, educational sessions and testing. Each entity has its own requirements for certification. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies should accredit a reputable online trainer certification organization, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Examples of certifying bodies include the American Council on Exercise, National Academy of Sports Medicine, and Aerobics and Fitness Association of America.

Qualifications

Most fitness trainer certification programs require you to be at least 18 years of age and certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The American Council on Exercise online certification program involves taking an exam that focuses on risk factor screening, fitness assessment, nutrition, exercise program creation and more. The National Academy of Sports Medicine requires that prospective trainers take a test that covers material such as movement, science, nutrition, fitness assessments and program design. Online certification from the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America requires that you take a three-day online workshop before taking a test that covers medical implications, exercise programming, anatomy, kinesiology and fitness assessments.

Cost

Some cost is associated with obtaining your online fitness certification. While fees vary from organization to organization, the total cost of certification can be several hundred dollars, according to the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. Certifying organizations also sell supplementary materials, such as diagnostic tests, study guides and online newsletters, to assist with the process, according to the American Council on Exercise. These materials can represent an added cost.

Recertification

Once you have obtained your online fitness certification, it is typically good for a period of two years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. After this time, you should seek continuing education or retesting as a means to recertify yourself.
