The desire to lose extra pounds has guided many people to pharmacies, health food stores and web-based companies as they seek products to help them keep their weight-loss resolutions. One weight-loss aid being marketed is Lipozene, a blend sold over the Internet whose manufacturers promise, with a money back guarantee, that you will lose weight and body fat in a short period of time.
Product Claims
The Lipozene website boldly claims guaranteed weight loss as the result of taking this product. Made of 100 percent natural ingredients, mainly glucomannan, it is alleged to have no side effects when taken as recommended.
Lipozene Dosage for Weight Loss
Each bottle of Lipozene contains 60 capsules, and the capsules are intended to be taken before meals. If your aim is to lose just a few pounds, the manufacturers state one capsule 30 minutes before each meal is sufficient. If you are trying losing more weight, you are directed to up the dosage to two capsules before meals, up to a maximum of six capsules per day. Each dose needs to be taken with an 8-oz. glass of water.
Glucomannan
Glucomannan, the main ingredient in Lipozene, is a polysaccharide made up of the sugars mannose and glucose. This water-soluble fiber is commonly used in the Asian food industry. It is derived from the root of Amorphophallus konjac, and able to absorb large quantities of water, up to 200 times its weight.
A study led by Rush University College of Nursing's J. Keithley and published in "Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine" in 2005 reported significant weight loss in overweight and obese subjects taking 2 to 4 g of glucomannan per day. The effect of this natural fiber on body weight has been studied for many years. In 1984, Dr. D. Walsh reported a clinical study in the "International Journal of Obesity," indicating a mean weight loss of 5.5 lbs. in obese individuals using glucomannan over an eight-week period. The dosage was two 500 mg capsules, or 1 g, one hour before meals. Like Lipozene, the capsules were taken with 8 oz. of water. Clinical trial have shown the active ingredient in Lipozene, glucomannan, has some credibility as an effective weight-loss agent.
Lipozene Reviews
DietResearch considers Lipozene to have passed one out of their five rating measures as a weight-loss product. They considered it expensive, only moderately effective at the dosage used, has poor customer service and a money back guarantee of only 30 days, as opposed to their preferred 60 days. They do, however, conclude that it is a natural product, and likely to be safe. Supplement review site UltimateFatBurner.com acknowledges that glucommanan has been clinically proven to be effective in weight loss, but states that you can add fiber to your diet without the expense of pricey supplements like Lipozene. This site also addressed the large number of complaints regarding customer service and billing practices.
Considerations/Warnings
Adding fiber to your diet will improve your health and promote weight loss. Vegetables, fruits, beans, peas, legumes, nuts, seeds, grains and whole grain products are among your best fiber choices, according to the staff at the MayoClinic.com. If you decide to add a supplement such as Lipozene to your diet, follow the instructions carefully. Health Canada has released a medical advisory that natural health products containing glucomannan can cause choking, and/or blockage of the throat, esophagus or intestines if not taken with at least 8 oz. of fluid.
