Facts on Traveling With Children

1. Keep Them Occupied

Although vacations are usually a time for fun and relaxation, traveling with children can cause a lot of anxiety and frustration for both parents and kids alike. To ease worries and keep tempers at bay, there are a few things you can do to make your trip more enjoyable. Your children are bound to become restless in the confines of a plane or car, so keep them occupied with small games and books. Music and movies can entertain your kids, too, so look for handheld music devices and portable DVD players to make those long trips less stressful.

2. Nix the Tantrums

Meet your kids' physical needs by making sure they are both well fed and well rested. Stave off those temper tantrums by keeping healthy travel snacks on hand in a bag or portable cooler. Opt for easy treats such apples, pretzels and 100% juice boxes. Save sugary crackers and cookies for special occasions only. If your child usually takes naps, make sure that you schedule a little quiet time during the day for them to nap. Taking an hour to rest will keep your children happy.

3. Make It Kid Friendly

Children like to have a good time on vacation too, but their idea of fun may differ slightly from yours. Be sure to include a few child focused activities, such as a trip to the zoo or amusement park, in addition to the more adult themed attractions. Children who feel their opinions matter are more likely to cooperate when it's time to go to the museum.

4. Plan Ahead

Don't forget to pack the extras. It's always a good idea to keep a spare change of clothing in a separate bag in case of spills or leaky diapers. No one wants to spend an entire flight with a wet lap, after all. And if you're traveling by car, keeping extra clothes in a small bag will save you the trouble of rifling through every suitcase to find what you need. Baby wipes clean dirty faces and hands, as well as germy chairs and tabletops. Over the counter pain relievers, fever reducers and stomach soothers come in handy for those unexpected head or bellyaches.

5. Just Smile

Remember to keep a positive attitude. Your behavior can influence your child's behavior, so try to keep your own stress to a minimum. If you can accept that there will be inconveniences, such as delayed flights and lost luggage, you can better handle whatever problems arise. Vacation is supposed to fun; treat it as an adventure and everyone will have a good time.
