Many people walk because they enjoy it, it helps them reduce stress and it enhances their health, but most also walk because they want to burn calories. How many calories you expend depends largely on how long you walk and how much you weigh. The greater your mass, the more energy it requires to move that mass through space.

Calorie Calculator

Online calculators, such as the one at DietandFitnessToday.com, can help you estimate how many calories you expend walking. At most of those websites, you select your estimated walking speed, how long you walked and your weight and then click on the "Calculate" button. The calculator estimates the number of calories you burned while walking.

Example

A walker who weighs 150 pounds and who walks at 4 mph for 30 minutes burns 179 calories. The more you weigh the more you proportionally burn. A 300-pound walker weighs twice as much and burns about twice as many calories, expending 357 calories during a 30-minute walk.

Burn More Calories

You can burn more calories and enhance your cardio fitness by strapping weights on your ankles, carrying weights in your hands or by pumping your arms while walking.
