Wheatgrass, a common grass grown in temperate climates, may offer several health benefits, according to Ann Wigmore, author of "The Wheatgrass Book." Wigmore and other alternative-medicine advocates believe that consuming wheatgrass juice may boost your energy levels and allow you to accomplish more with less sleep. The grass, which is an abundant source of chlorophyll, may also enhance your immune system and alleviate depression. Preparing wheatgrass juice is a relatively simple task that requires few tools.
Step 1
Trim the root ends from 3 to 4 oz. of fresh wheatgrass. Rinse the wheatgrass under cold water to remove any dirt or other foreign particles.
Step 2
Place the trimmed wheatgrass into the loading chute of a vegetable juicer. Place a short glass or cup under the juice chute.
Step 3
Turn the juicer on. Slowly press down on the wheatgrass with the press included with your juicer.
Step 4
Refrigerate the resulting wheatgrass juice for 30 to 60 minutes before serving.
Step 5
Add the chilled wheatgrass juice to fresh fruit or vegetable juice to improve its taste, and to obtain a variety of vitamins and nutrients.
Step 6
Place the wheatgrass juice mixture in a blender with 1 to 2 tbsp. flax seeds to add omega-3 fatty acids, which may help prevent heart disease and support brain function. Blend until smooth.
Tips and Warnings
- Add 1/2 to 1 cup of crushed ice before blending to achieve a smoothie-like consistency. Add 1 to 2 cups soy milk before blending to add lean soy protein to your wheatgrass drink.
