Vitamins to Make Fingernails Stronger

Many people suffer from brittle or weak nails that bend and break too easily. There is even a condition called brittle nail syndrome that causes nails to be dry and break easily. Some beauty supply companies make millions inventing solutions to treat this problem. However, simple and natural treatments such as vitamins may be enough to provide you with the supplement that is needed to achieve stronger fingernails.

Vitamin A

A deficiency of vitamin A or retinoid can lead to brittle nails, especially in people who suffer from Psoriasis. Psoriasis is a skin condition that can affect the nails and cause them to become very weak. Taking a supplement of vitamin A can help to improve the strength of the nails and reduce the damage caused by brittle or very thin nails that break too easily. Taking the recommended daily allowance such as 1,000 mcg every day can be a help in improving this condition.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has been recommended alone or in combination with other supplements to treat weak nails. According to Noah Scheinfeld, Maurice J. Dahdah and Richard Scher with the "Journal of Drugs in Dermatology" report that vitamin C (2 to 3mg) along with primrose oil (30mg) and pyridoxine (25mg) on a daily basis is thought to be very helpful with improving nail strength. This combination is frequently recommended by physicians and is very helpful in correcting this problem.

Biotin (Vitamin H)

According to The National Library of Medicine, biotin is thought to be helpful with improving brittle nails and is sometimes prescribed for use with this problem. Biotin has been used to strengthen hooves in animals, and therefore is thought to be helpful in strengthening nails in humans. According to Noah Scheinfeld et al with the "Journal of Drugs in Dermatology," taking a supplement of 2 1/2mg once a day is enough to abate brittle nails. Although there still needs to be more research done on biotin and nail health, this is a vitamin to try if you have especially brittle nails.
