Green Mountain at Fox Run is a weight loss program for women held at the Fox Run retreat in Vermont. Green Mountain uses a flexible menu to help women with varying dietary needs develop healthy eating habits. The Green Mountain program also helps women develop a positive relationship with exercise to help support their weight loss goals.

History

Thelma Wayler founded the Green Mountain weight loss program in 1973 in an empty dorm at Green Mountain College in Vermont. Wayler founded this program on her theory that diets don't work. Wayler instead focused her program on the ideas that women could reach their fitness by eating well, moving their bodies and thinking positively. The dietary choices available at the Green Mountain program are formulated by a team of health professionals including dieticians and human metabolism experts. The Green Mountain program now takes place at the Fox Run retreat in Vermont, a former ski resort.

Types

The Green Mountain program has dietary tracts for women based on a variety of health concerns and weight loss goals. Green Mountain has dietary tracts for women suffering from diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome. These tracts focus on lifestyle changes that will help to keep women healthy while living with these diseases. Green Mountain has a tract for young women suffering from unwanted weight gain. The program for young women focuses on making healthy food and exercises choices while dealing with the hectic schedule of a college student or young professional.

Food Choices

The Green Mountain diet does not isolate specific nutritional elements to demonize, such as a low-carb diet, but rather seeks to lay out balanced meals. A dinner entree may be chicken and butternut squash stew with a carrot basil salad. For lunch a Green Mountain client may have a curry chicken salad. A breakfast meal may include berry lemon muffins. The Green Mountain diet also does not eliminate dessert. According to Fitwoman.com, chocolate zucchini cake is a popular desert at the retreat.

Benefits

All of the Green Mountain diet programs claim to encourage lasting physical benefits due to a focus on lifestyle changes instead of short-term fad dieting. Independent diet review body Dietchoices.com gives this claim a favorable rating due to the line of communication that Green Mountain mantains with its clients after their stay at the retreat is over.

Considerations

Independent diet review body Dietchoices.com gives Green Mountain a favorable rating, but you should also consider that this type of diet program can be expensive. A private room for one week costs $3,300. A double room is $3,000 and you can get a room with two roommates for $2,400. A one month stay ranges from $8,000 to $11,000. (Fees are as of October 2010.) This program is one of the best of its kind, according to U.S. News and ELLE magazine, if you can afford it.
