If you're trying to lose a few pounds, it might be tempting to lose the weight as quickly as possible. The 3 Day Diet, also incorrectly called the Cleveland Clinic Diet, is a meal plan that involves eating a calorie-restricted diet for three days in order to eliminate extra pounds. Consult your doctor before making changes in your current diet plan.

History

The origin of the 3-Day Diet is unknown, although it has been mistakenly attributed to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. On ClevelandClinic.org, Melissa Stevens, nutrition program coordinator for Preventive Cardiology and Rehabilitation at Cleveland Clinic, says that the diet was not created by the clinic and as of 2010, is not recommended by the hospital.

Significance

The 3-Day Diet focuses on strict portions of low-calorie food combinations. The diet is not recommended to be used for longer than three days, according to EveryDiet.org in the article "3-Day Diet." The 3-Day Diet might cause weight loss because sudden calorie restrictions may quickly eliminate water weight. This weight will most likely return after resuming your normal eating plan, notes EveryDiet.org.

3-Day Diet Meals

The first day of the diet, eat 1/2 grapefruit and a slice of toast with 1 tbsp. peanut butter for breakfast, according to EveryDiet.org. For lunch, eat 1/2 cup tuna and a slice of toast. For dinner, eat 1 cup of green beans, 1 cup of carrots and 3 oz. of any type of lean meat, such as turkey or chicken. Eat an apple and 1 cup of vanilla ice cream for dessert. On day two, eat a slice of toast, a banana and an egg for breakfast. Eat five crackers and a cup of cottage cheese for lunch. Eat two hot dogs, a banana, 1 cup of broccoli and 1/2 cup of carrots for dinner. For dessert, eat 1/2 cup of vanilla ice cream. For breakfast on day three, eat five crackers, a slice of cheddar cheese and an apple. For lunch, eat a piece of toast and a hard-boiled egg. For dinner, eat 1 cup of carrots, 1 cup melon, 1 cup cauliflower and 1 cup tuna. Eat 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Considerations

If desired, substitute a piece of toast for five crackers, and vice versa. If you dislike grapefruit, eat an orange instead. Add condiments as desired to flavor your food during the diet, but only use lemon, mustard, cooking spray and a small dash of salt or pepper.

Expert Insight

According to MayoClinic.com in the article "Weight Loss: Choosing a Diet That's Right for You," a weight-loss plan should not leave you feeling deprived and hungry. Tell your doctor if you're thinking of starting the 3-Day Diet or any other fad diet, and be honest about it. Your doctor might recommend a registered dietitian who can help you make wise food choices that will help you effectively lose weight.
