1. Clean out Negative Energy
Yoga is commonly defined as the realignment of your spirit, body and soul. You do this by by performing specific moves in a specific order to allow your body to release negative energy and absorb clean energy. Yoga poses are designed to soothe your spirit, focus your mind, strengthen your body and leave you feeling calm and refreshed.
2. Class is in Session
Yoga classes are offered at yoga studios, your local YMCA and community centers. Classes typically begin with a warming-up period comprised of simple yoga moves to help you stretch and prepare for the more strenuous poses. An additional cooling down period will end your class. Most sessions cover breath control, flexibility and meditation. Classes are divided into categories suitable for several levels of ability, and the instructor will walk around the class helping students with form and offering tips and encouragement.
3. Does This Mat Match my Chakra?
The fun part about starting yoga is you get to go out and purchase a few things just for you. Pick up a good quality yoga mat to offer padding and support, and you'll want your own for hygienic reasons. Pick up some yoga clothing. If you prefer not to wear traditional form-fitting gear, choose loose, comfortable outfits that allow you to move freely. Bring a towel with you, since you will perspire during class. Some facilities encourage the consumption of water during class while others discourage it, so check with your instructor prior to class time.
4. Name That Yoga
Hatha Yoga is usually a slow-moving yoga that uses basic poses. Vinyasa Yoga is similar to Hatha, but it requires more difficult poses and focuses more on breath. Hot Yoga is performed in a heated room to increase flexibility and to promote sweating to remove toxins from the body. Iyengar Yoga was created by B.K.S. Iyengar, who considered consciousness a state that includes the ego, the mind and the intellect, known as the chitta. Iyengar Yoga is specifically designed to quiet the chitta.
5. Massage Your Internal Organs
You will benefit from yoga workouts by increasing your range of motion through stretching. Increasing your flexibility helps you avoid injuries, and eases pain associated with inflammation and arthritis. By performing yoga exercises, you are effectively massaging your own internal organs; and who doesn't love a good massage? Yoga has been proven to reduce stress, heart rate and in some cases even blood pressure.
