Fifth-grade basketball practice drills should help teach kids proper technique and form on both the offensive and defensive sides of the court. While fifth-graders do not have the coordination or experience to perform advanced drills, work on skills like shooting and passing will help prepare your kids for the basic game of basketball.
Form Shooting Drill
This form shooting drill is designed to help improve the player's technique and close-range shooting accuracy. Have two players stand two feet from the basket on opposing sides. Both should bend slightly at the knees and aim the basketball at the square on the backboard. Have one take a shot and the other get the rebound. The teammate then shoots and the first shooter gets the rebound. Keep track of how many baskets each player makes. The winner of the drill is the one who makes the most.
Basic Passing Drill
This basic passing drill is designed to help improve your child's passing ability while on offense. Have one child stand at the top of the key with a ball in his dribbling hand. Place two players at the baseline and wait for the coach's whistle. Have your child dribble the ball to the right side of the court until he is at the foul line. Have him bend his knees and fire a chest pass at one of the two players at the baseline. Have the player who catches the ball take a shot and return the ball back to the first player.
One-on-One Dribble Drill
This drill is designed to help improve your child's dribbling technique and form. Have your kid start at the baseline with a basketball in her hand. Have a teammate stand in front of her with her knees bent and body facing directly toward your child. On the coach's whistle, have your child take three dribbles to her right side. Then have her switch hands and dribble three dribbles to the left. Have her repeat this drill until she gets to center court. During the drill, have the defender attempt to get in front of the dribbler and prevent her from getting to the half-court line.
