Eating meats that are raised on pasture rather than factory farms is helpful to the environment because it requires less fossil fuel than a feedlot diet of dried corn and soy. Animals do their own harvesting and fertilizing when raised on pasture. The ground is covered with green pasture all year so it optimally harvests solar energy. Grazed pasture helps remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Supporting pasture raised animals through the diet you choose can help prevent global warming. There is a variety of foods you can implement into your diet that are environmentally friendly.

Fish

Many fisheries are being threatened with collapse because of destruction to the habitat and unsustainable fishing practices. Responsible harvesting and advances in contained fish farming are important for the environment. You can support sustainable fisheries by choosing shellfish grown on farms using racks, nets or lines which are suspended in the water. Methods such as these help minimize damage to bottom habitat during harvesting.

Meat

Choosing grass fed meat helps minimize chemicals released into the environment. On factory farms, ammonia is released into the air because the excrement builds up in the feedlots The fumes sicken the animals and farm workers they negatively impact people in nearby homes as well. Grazed lands aids in slowing global warming by minimizing carbon dioxide from the air. Grazing land in the Great Plains contain over 40 tons of carbon dioxide per acre. Cultivated soils have approximately 26 tons.

Coffee

Shade-grown coffee plantations that do not use pesticides or herbicides are safer for the environment. Shade trees enhance the soil and provide homes for birds. Thus, the birds provide natural insect control. The conventional coffee plantations are destroying wildlife habitat at a rapid rate. The population of songbirds across North and South America is diminishing because of the loss of shade trees. This has led to a 20 percent decline in migratory bird populations as well. Substitute your normal cup of coffee in the morning with with shade-grown coffee to help your environment.
