Since the revision of the U.S. Department of Agriculture food pyramid in 2005, Americans have begun to pay more attention not only to the amount of food they eat, but the types of food they eat. Food does more than just provide calories. Some foods are rich in protein, a basic building block of muscle and tissues. The natural fats and oils in other foods help to regulate hormones and assimilate the fat-soluble vitamins. In addition to being rich in vitamins and enzymes, fruits and vegetables provide fiber and help to detoxify the body. There are a number of foods that have a cleansing effect and are often used in detox programs.

Lemon and Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits, especially lemon, have a powerful cleansing effect on the liver and gall bladder. Lemon is the principle ingredient of the popular "Master Cleanse," which is a seven- to 10-day fast consisting of consuming nothing but purified water and a spicy lemonade made with lemon juice, cayenne pepper and pure maple syrup. Consuming lemon or other citrus fruits high in citric acid cause the gall bladder and liver to purge themselves of toxins. As the liver plays a critical role in the metabolism of fats, a healthy liver is essential for weight loss and detoxification.

Cabbage and Other Crucifers

Cruciferus vegetables, such as broccoli, celery and cabbage, have a cleansing effect on the intestines. Not only are they high in fiber, but they provide vitamins and minerals essential for optimal health. Celery is a natural source of sodium and other electrolytes, which help to regulate fluids in the body.

Green Apples

Green apples, such as Granny Smith's, are used to stimulate digestion and encourage elimination. Detox guru and author, Dr. Elson Haas recommends beginning each day of a cleanse by slowly chewing an apple or pear at room temperature. Ayurvedic practitioners believe this activates digestive juices and helps to wake up agni, or digestive fire.

Tropical Fruits

Tropical fruits are high in digestive enzymes. Bromelain, found in pineapple, not only helps to break down proteins in the system, but is a natural anti-inflammatory. Papain, found in papaya is commonly used in digestive enzyme supplements. It breaks down proteins and promotes cleansing. It is used in herbal medicine to expel parasites and worms.

Root Vegetables

Fiber-rich root vegetables, such as beets, turnips and sweet potatoes, help to cleanse the colon. Many root vegetables are high in another important electrolyte, potassium. Because these high calorie veggies grow in the ground, they absorb important minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc, from the soil.
