Diet, poor circulation, hormonal changes and lack of activity are all factors that can contribute to cellulite, the lumpy fat deposits below the surface of the skin. While it can be difficult to get rid of cellulite, there are ways to reduce it. Drinking fresh grapefruit juice is one popular home remedy. The best way to treat the condition is to lose excess body fat through diet and getting more strength training and aerobic exercise. The essential nutrients and fat burning antioxidants in grapefruit juice can help you reduce the appearance of unwanted cellulite.

Step 1

Drink an 8 oz. glass of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice before breakfast every morning. Grapefruit contains fewer calories than the body needs to digest it. Because of its high fiber content, grapefruit takes longer to digest, which means that your body will be burning extra calories and eventually body fat.

Step 2

Cleanse and detoxify your body. Like other citrus fruits, the acid in grapefruit juice has a strong detoxifying effect. The process works better if you do not eat any foods but fruits until lunch. To get the Vitamin C and other nutrients your body needs for energy in the morning, squeeze a couple of oranges along with one-half red grapefruit.

Step 3

Reduce insulin levels in the blood by drinking grapefruit juice before every meal. Findings of a study published in "Chemistry and Industry Magazine" suggest that consuming grapefruit with meals may help reduce insulin levels, and therefore, lower blood glucose levels for up to two hours afterward. Including grapefruit in the diet may help the body to metabolize sugars in a more efficient manner.

Step 4

Increase water consumption to speed metabolism. Grapefruit is about 90 percent water; therefore, the high water content in grapefruit helps cleanse the system. Because grapefruit is low in sodium, it can help flush out excess water from the body, which can decrease the appearance of cellulite. For people who do not like drinking plain water, filling a glass with 2 or 3 oz. of grapefruit juice and the rest with water can help increase fluid intake.

Step 5

Get the daily supply of Vitamin C that your body needs to produce collagen, a protein that makes up connective tissue. Collagen supports body tissues such as the skin, bones, cartilage, muscles and tendons. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that prevents the release of free radicals, which can damage collagen, making cellulite worse.

Step 6

Drink grapefruit juice as a source of other essential nutrients. Grapefruit is a potassium-rich food that keeps the body from retaining excess fluid, which can contribute to cellulite. Thiamin, Vitamin B6 and niacin in grapefruit juice each have a role in helping the body metabolize food in a more efficient manner.

Tips and Warnings

  • Vitamins C and E may help to reduce cellulite by improving blood circulation and protecting against cell damage. Grapefruit and other fresh fruits and vegetables are nutrient dense foods rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. Lower insulin levels help the body to metabolize food more efficiently for energy, allowing the body to store less fat.
